Carbon Air Purifiers: Excellent Prefilter

Although we cannot see it with the naked eye, what’s floating around in the air can have a big impact on our level of comfort. Allergy and asthma sufferers are at the mercy of what is in the air, and even those of us who don’t have that problem do have to deal with odors and smoke.

We don’t have to deal with everything the air contains, though. Air purifiers can remove most everything that can cause us discomfort from the air. There are a number of ways this can be done, through the use of ionization, ultraviolet lights, HEPA filters and carbon.

Carbon air purifiers are effective for a number of things. Carbon can trap chemicals and gases on a molecular level, removing them from the air. However, carbon does not remove large particles.

Activated carbon is what results when carbon is oxygen treated. This process opens up millions of little pores in the carbon. These holes then capture the molecules from the air.

The greater the amount of carbon, the more it can filter out of the air. As the honeycomb structure becomes full it is much like a sponge. However, unlike a sponge, you cannot simply wring it out to remove what has been captured. Instead, the carbon needs to be replaced with new.

Because carbon air purifiers are unable to capture certain things, carbon filters are most often used as a prefilter in air purifiers that use other filtering technology. The most common technique for air purification that activated carbon in used with is the HEPA filter.

The carbon prefilter serves a couple of purposes. It is better than the HEPA filter at removing odors and gases. Also, it takes out some contaminants from the air before it enters the HEPA filter and allows that filter to complete the task with the smaller pollution particles.

Carbon air purifier filters, acting as just a part of a air purification system need to be replaced on a regular basis to ensure that the pores are not all clogged and they are doing their job properly.

There are actually some other materials that can trap the same material as carbon, but these materials are far more expensive, making coal the natural best choice for this process.

Not all carbon filters are the same. The thicker the carbon the more it can absorb and the less that can be missed. When looking at an air purifier, consider the size of the carbon filter and look into its capacity.

Although carbon doesn’t work well on its own as an all air purifier, when combined with other techniques of air purification it can play a very important and effective role.
